Similarities & Differences on Riverdale & Shooter.

Homework - Steve - 27.09.18 - 05.10.18

The kind of media of the tv Program ‘Riverdale’ which is filmed in America. ‘Shooter is also a tv show that is filmed in America. Riverdale is a teen drama tv show which is based on a fictional town within America. The storyline is based on a rich popular boy who dies on July 4th. Four friends cope with the murder investigation all together in everyday life with some unexpected turns. Shooter is quite a bit different, but there is some similarities. Shooter is based in Santa Clarita for season one. The story line is about a family of three who are living a normal life after, Bob-Lee was an ex marine sniper who gets set up to kill the President. He has to leave his family and go on the run from the police and FBI.

As Riverdale is a teen drama so the age rating I would say is 12+ and for males and females to enjoy. However Shooter is crime and action tv show with the age rating starting at 15 so I feel like older teens and adults who enjoy this type of content would really like this show.

The director of Riverdale is Rob Seidenglanz and producer is J.B Moranville. The main cast of Riverdale includes KJ Apa as Archie Andrews. Lilli Reinhart as Betty Cooper. Camila Mendes as Veronica Lodge. Cole Sprouse as Jughead Jones and finally Madelaine Petsch as Cheryl Blossom. The director of Shooter is Antoine Fuqua and producer is Ryan Phillippe (who is also the main character in the American tv series). The main cast of Shooter is Ryan Phillippe as Bob-Lee Swagger. Shantel VanSanten as Julie Swagger. Cynthia Addai-Robinson as Nadine Menphis, and finally Omar Epps as Issac Johnson.

There are many different visuals that are included in the tv show Riverdale such as lighting and camera angles. Starting with the lighting, it goes from dark to light as also in the restaurant the four friends normally film in has a slight red light that shines over their faces which makes a unique effect. With the camera angles there is a lot of filming which makes the camera angles different all the time but some of the popular angles the show use as Close-up, Establishing shots, Mirror shots, over the shoulder shots and Tracking / Dolly shots. The visuals of Shooter are quite similar to Riverdale but there isn’t the red lights! Most of the time the lighting is bright and you can see the characters well, unless it is filmed during the night but the lighting is still good and can see the characters. With the camera angles, it is mostly like Riverdale with the angles such as, Close-ups, Establishing shot, Tracking and Dolly shots, extreme close-ups and Low angle shots.

As for sounds.. Riverdale has a lot of background music for when there is no dialogue. and many sound effects such as, gun shots, motor bike and cars, phone calls and slamming doors. Shooter is practically the same, the series has background music for when the is no dialogue and all different sound effects like gun shots, screeching cars, crowds and crying.

I really enjoy watching Riverdale as it is a teen drama, so most of the characters are teenagers living a teenage life. there is loads of intense drama in every episode which gets you hooked. The lighting makes the episodes as it always quite dark and gloomy, the one thing I do really like about the tv show is how the characters act through-out and always being mysterious. On the other hand.. Shooter is they type of show I will binge watch, everything I love about it, the storyline to the characters. Each of the characters have their own touch to the show such as, the main character Ryan Phillippe is actually the writer of the tv series.

One of the things I don’t like about Riverdale is that the lighting is quite dark most of the time. With Shooter, I don’t like the way the last season (season three) ended, I feel like they should not done what they did unless they bring out another season.

For Riverdale i would change the things I did not like about it which I talked about before. I would make the lighting just a bit brighter so you can see the characters more. as the lighting is only really bright when they are in a house or in the school. As for Shooter, obviously again I would change the last season or make another one. There was an announcement that there was going to make a season four, however a few months later the producers of shooter  said that the show was cancelled.

Welcome Quiz Review

My Plan:

My main goal for the ‘Welcome Quiz’ is to get as many videos from around the college as our group can and edit them. Our group also needs to collect audio for the project and talk about the questions that are on the sheet. The equipment we need to complete the task set is a Camera, Tripod and a audio recorder, we also need to take the sheet of paper with the questions on around the college so we know where to film. The skills I need to use during this project is how to use and camera, tripod, audio recorder and how to edit in premiere. The research our group will need to do is where places are in college, how to use a audio recorder and how to do things in Adobe Premiere editor.

Research & experimenting:

Our group was unsure on how to use the audio recorder so we ask the teacher how to use it and sometimes we asked people around the college of where places were. The research we made and found out made the task easier because if we didn’t ask how to use the audio recorder we most probably would have not got the task done, with asking people around the college, it made is also easier as it made the process quicker instead of trying to find it ourselves.

Production:

Our group faced a problem which was not being able to film in the LRC however we did resolve it. We resolved the problem by secretly filming in the LRC. The process of this project was good as it was the first task we was set out to do, I got as many clips from around the college with audio to go with it. Imported it to the computer then to my USB stick. I finally edited the audio clips and videos in Adobe Premiere.

Refection:

In this project I did achieve my main goal which was to film as many video as I could in the time slot. Me and my group also achieved what we were set out to do, editing, all the videos and audio. The project I done has help me with any other project as I know where places are in the college and also how to use the audio recorder and how to edit using Premiere.

My Welcome Quiz Video:

Camera Angle Shots Review

Plan:

My main goal for this work was to collect as many clips different camera angle shots as I could, such as close-up, establishing shot, low and high angles and tilt. After I collected the camera angles shots, i emailed them to myself (as I filmed them on my phones and need to import them onto my laptop.) I put the videos onto a USB stick to edit them at college. The equipment I used to complete this project was, a phone, different subjects, USB stick and Adobe Premiere editor. The skills I had to used in order to complete my task, I had to know how to video, how to export a video from my phone to a USB stick and also how to edit the video I had taken. The Research I have to do, is to know what camera angles I will be using in my project and to make sure I know how to take a video correctly.

Research & Experimenting:

The research I done was how to take the shot I wanted to do properly, as I didn’t want to do a different angle for another angle. I also looked into what angle I wanted to do for my project. The sources I used was Youtube and the booklet on Ezone. I used Youtube to figure out how to film the angle I wanted to use. The booklet on Ezone showed me the different angles I could use, how to used them and different scenarios of what I could film with the different angles (which was helpful). With Youtube I wanted to watch a few videos to make me understand the types of shot each angle was. The research I done helped me understand more and made my videos better.

Production:

There was a few problems that I faced during this task such as, filming the wrong way round with my phone being portrait, trying to import the videos onto my USB stick and adding text to the videos while editing them. I solved theses problems by, re-videoing the shots the right way (landscape), figuring out how to import the videos to my USB stick and asking for help with how to put text in the video when editing.

My process began by looking into the camera angles I wanted to use in my project and how they work/look. I then began to get my object/subjects together so I could film the different angles. I started with the camera angle ‘close-up’ with a dogs toy, the second angle was ‘establishing shot’ with the fish tank in my house as the tank is quite wide. The next two shots I done of a plant, one was for a ‘high angle shot’ and the other for ‘low angle shot’. The last three camera shots I took was on my dogs which were ‘extreme close-up’, ’tilt shot’ and ‘dolly/tracking shot’. Once I finished film all the camera angle shots I then emailed myself the videos to put them onto my laptop, after that was complete I put them onto my USB stick to edit when I go to college. I imported the videos to Adobe Premiere editor and put them together, added effects and titles and then exported them to my USB stick and put them on my Youtube channel.

Refection:

I achieved my main goal of collecting all the photos I wanted for my task, video them and edit them. I also did achieve the work what my teacher set me to do. The mistakes I made while completing my project won’t happen next time as I have learnt from them.

The History of the Music Video

In the 1920’s the song ‘St Louis Blues’ by Louis Armstrong came out. The video was in black and white, there was a story and meaning behind this song which was this man was poor but saw the women on the street who had her heart broken. The Jazz singer/song writer decided to write a song about the situation that happened.

Moving onto the 1960’s, when The Beatles were popular. The film technology was getting cheaper and broadcasting was growing, the pop cultures were starting to get noticed a lot more such as The Beatles, Elvis Presey etc.

  • This music video was considered as the first video to be broadcasted on tv, and kept making videos through out the 60s.

Into the 1970’s, this decade was about experimenting with different film.

Before MTV broadcasted in the 80’s, Top of the Pops was very popular British music chart tv program to the present day of 2006. It was one of the many first tv programs to be in colour as colour in tv was released in 1969.

In 1980’s MTV came out on tv, which took over tv. the tv show included music such as, videos and the different cultures in music, however it is not like how it is today..

  • The first music video to come out on the 24 hour music video show was ‘Video Killed the Radio Star’ by the band ‘The Buggles’.

Present day (80’s – 2018)

A lot of things have changed from 1980’s such as, the quality of the music videos, the marketing and the videos being more creative.

The film TAG is a comedy, any one can watch it if they like them kind of films. However there is an age restriction which is R.

Age, gender, interests, class/income, subcultures, what else are they likely to be interested in?

The age should be 12A just because of some of the content, the audience interest is they like a true story, comedy, and a film they can sit a watch with either family and friends, any class/income & subcultures would like this movie unless you are not interested in the what the movie is about.

  • The director of the film TAG is Jeff Tomsic
  • The producers of TAG are Mark Steilen, Todd Garner and Sean Robins.
  • The writers of this film are Mark Steilen and Rob McKittrick

Describe the product (or part of it) – USE TECHNICAL LANGUAGE

Visuals

The film TAG has a lot of camera shots through-out the movie which are:

TAG is based on a true story which is The Wall Street Journal, the film is about five grown men that were friends when they were in school who played tag in the play ground. Thirty years later all five friends are still playing this childhood game, every single May of each year they go and find each other (even if they are in different country) to tag one another. However one out of the five has never been tagged before and this year in May the four men make a plans to finally tag him.

What did you like about it?

I like the comedy side of this film, it runs through out with jokes made by the characters.

What didn’t you like about it?

Some parts of the film were hard to understand which made it a bit boring but apart from that the film was good.

What would you do differently if YOU were making it?

If I was making the film TAG, I would make the start of it longer as the childhood bit wasn’t very informative as I thought it should of been.

Camera Angles & Moves

Homework - Creative Media - L2 - Steve - Week 2

Establishing Shot:

An established shot is normally either a very wide shot or an extremely wide shot, which is normally the first shot of the project being filmed, this type of shot fits into cinematography, it also shows people where the action will be taking place . Another name established shot can be called is simply just long shot. The shot is typically filmed by taking a picture or filming in a wide shot, doing this takes time and several shots before getting it right, an established shot is used mostly for wide landscape shots and sky-scrapers. The established shot I have choose is from the tv program ‘Friends’, it is set in New York City in Greenwich Village. The website I got the picture from is just above the picture. The director of the show is James Burrows and was first released in September 1994.

http://friends.wikia.com/wiki/Friends

Extreme close-up:

An extreme close-up shot is to get very fine details of what you are photographing or filming, theses kind of shots give the audience a lot of thoughts as the mood of the pictures differ in each shot, some are dark and gloomy and some can be bright and colourful. The other names extreme close-up shot are know by is ECU or XCU and sometime depending how close the shot is can be called micro shot photography. The way extreme close-up shots are filmed is to get in the characters face or intimate space, to reveal their emotions and what is going on in the film. The extreme close-up shot I have chosen is from the movie War for the Planet of the Apes, it is set in a Canadian city called Vancouver, the website I found the picture from is below. The director of this film is Matt Reeves and was released in July 2017.

Medium Shot:

A medium shot is an all-purpose shot which is just a normal size photo or film shot, this shot is used for the audience to pick up on the characters movement and emotions. This type of shot is typically used for a dialog sequence and is focused from the top of the head to either the legs or feet. The picture I got from a medium shot was the film ‘The Hunger Games’ In the particular shoot one of the main characters Katniss is focused to kill an animal to take back to her family to feed them, she does this by using a bow & arrow. ‘The Hungry Game was directed by Gary Ross and was first released in March 2012.

Long Shot:

A long shot in film is when a scene is shot from far away catching everything that is going on, this kind of shot is more used for landscape and skyscrapers more then just a normal scene in a film. A long shot can also be referred as either a full shot or a wide shot, and this kind of shot is obviously film quite a distance from the scene and for a full figure shot or a place. The Long shot picture I have choose is from the film ‘Ratatouille’, the rat Remy has just figured out that he is in Paris in France, he is looking out onto the landscape with the Eiffel Tower in the far left corner. The director of this Disney film is Brad Bird and this film was released in June 2007.

High Angle Shot:

An High Angle Shot is where the camera is high up but tilted either down or just straight forward onto the character or subject. This technique shot is used for the audience to feel as if the character is week, powerless and vulnerable. A High angle also effects the mood of that particular shot whether it is happy, sad, angry or scared. The picture I have chosen for a high angle shot is from one of many films ‘Harry Potter Order of the Phoenix’, where the Dark Arts try to attack Harry in a tunnel, he then falls to the ground where the camera technique comes in. The director of Harry Potter films is Chris Columbus and this actual film was released in July 2007.

Low Angle Shot:

A low Angle shot is where the camera is being film from either the characters eyeline or below, then the camera will be tilted upwards. This type of shot is filmed so the character looks big, strong and powerful, so totally different from a ‘high angle shot’. The audience can notice the difference from the characters mood and posture from changing the shot from high to low. The Low angle shot I have chosen ‘The Loin King’ In this particular scene the film uses a low angle shot to creative the effect of the loins being the leaders of all the animals and welcome another member of the pack. The film was released in October 1994 and the director is Roger Allers.

Canted/Dutch Shot:

A Canted/Dutch shot is a shot that is filmed while the camera is slightly tilted on it’s side, There is a few names that it is also named, such as ‘dutch tilt’, ‘dutch angle’, ‘canted angle’ and ‘oblique angle’. This kind of shot is filmed on a roll axis and tiled to one side to make the shot composed with vertical lines, a dutch shot is filmed for a dramatic, uneasy, madness and disorientated effect on the audience. The film ‘Thor’ is the shot I chose for the canted/dutch shot, in the picture below, it shows the audience that the character is a bit off-topic and disorientated. The director is Taika Waititi and it was released in April 2011.

Panning Shot:

A panning shot is a motion picture or film, the camera is horizontal which gets the perfect shot of the object when going round. The camera can also be tilted up, down and vertically if its filming a person. Panning shot is normally filmed for moving objects such as cars and motor bikes, people, just any moving subject. The panning shot I have chose is from the film ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ This particular scene is when Hagrid and Harry are about to set off to get to where they are going. The director is David Yates and was released in November 2010.

Pedestal Shot:

A pedestal shot is when the camera moves vertically with the subject, this type of shot give the techniques to move up and down. The shot is filmed by having a camera on a pedestal, which is a kind of equipment that makes the camera move smoothly up, down, left and right. The name pedestal shot is also referred as pedding, the typical places you would use a pedestal shot for a tv show or live tv.

Image result for pedestal shot in a tv

Zoom Shot:

A zoom shot is from the lens on the camera, which makes the film look like it is zooming into the subject. The shot is filmed by just the lens, the lens is the thing that makes the subject in-large, also it really easy to use but hard to get the shot right. The zoom shot is normally used for animation films but can be found in other films aswell. ‘The Hunger Game’ was the film I chose for the zoom shot, the lens is focused on the character’s face but the arrows in the background are blurred, this is what the lens does, it focuses on the subject that is closest to the camera and blur the background out. I am not sure which ‘Hunger games’ this is but the director is Gary Ross.

Dolly Shot:

A dolly shot is a cart where the camera sits, the cart is on wheels that run along the subject, the shot can also be referred as tracking shot or trucking shot. The dolly shot moves backwards and forwards to get closer to the subject or further away. This kind of shot is on a cart which is on a rail that moves alone side the subject or object, the dolly cart does not move on it’s own so a person does have to push it alone the rails. The film I have chose for a dolly shot is ‘Jaws’, in this particular scene the camera is focused on the character who is sitting on the beach. The director of ‘Jaws’ is Steven Spilberg and was first released in December 1975.

Crane Shot:

A crane shot is where the camera is on a crane or jib to shot the film they are making, this kind of shot is on a crane, the camera can move up, down, left and right it also can be used to move towards and away from the subject. The crane shot is mostly required in Hollywood movies but are also used in the UK, directors normally used this shot to end a film with it moving back from the main subject. The film I chose for the crane shot is from ‘Fast and Furious 6’ where one of the characters is jumping from one car to another whilst it is moving, the camera on the crane is in-front moving with the cars. The director of this film is Justin Lin and was first released in May 2013.

Research Task 3

Creative Media Level 2 – Nick – 18.09.18

What is the purpose of research?

The purpose of research is so you can get the right information for what you need it for, such as a project.

What is primary research and give an example:

Primary research is research that you find out yourself either by observation, talking in groups, doing surveys or interview. However people may lie in surveys to cover themselves up or to make things quicker.

What is secondary research?

Secondary research is research you find from other sources such as, the internet, books or magazines. The information can either be true or false as some websites are not secure or reliable.

Why is Wikipedia a poor website to use?

Wikipedia is not a reliable website to get information because anyone can access the website and change the information, this can make the information false.

What is a bibliography?

A bibliography is a list of either websites or sources you have used to complete your work, only use bibliography on the ‘quotations’ or ‘paraphrase’ you use in the text, not background reading. Bibliography is also used to link all the websites so whoever is reading your work can open it and see where you got your information from, which is easier than trying to find it through the internet.
